Classic Old Fashioned Recipe

This recipe focuses on building layers of flavour with the kit’s ingredients, creating a complex and aromatic Old Fashioned.

ComponentIngredientAmount
SpiritBourbon or Rye Whisky60 ml (2 oz)
SweetenerLight Muscovado Sugar1-2 tsp (to taste)
BittersAngostura Bitters2-3 dashes
InfusionJuniper Berries2-3 berries (crushed lightly)
InfusionDried Cranberries3-5 berries
GarnishOrange or Blood Orange Garnish1 slice
GarnishBlood Orange & Mint SaltsFor the rim (optional)

Method

  1. Prepare the Glass (Optional Rim): If desired, pour a small amount of blood orange & mint salts onto a small plate. Run an orange or blood orange wedge around the outside of your chilled rocks glass rim. Gently press the outer edge of the rim into the salts for an aromatic touch.
  2. Muddle (Infusion Base): In your Garnish Club shaker jar (or a mixing glass), combine the light muscovado sugar, Angostura bitters, juniper berries, and dried cranberries. Add a splash (about 1/2 tsp) of whisky to help dissolve the sugar and muddle these ingredients together gently with a muddler or the back of a spoon. The goal is to release the oils from the juniper and cranberries and integrate them with the sugar and bitters, not to pulverize them.
  3. Add Whisky & Stir: Pour the whisky into the jar. Add a large amount of fresh ice.
  4. Stir to Perfection: Stir the mixture consistently for about 30-60 seconds. An Old Fashioned is always stirred, never shaken, to achieve proper chilling and dilution without aeration. Taste as you go to reach your preferred balance.
  5. Serve: Place a large, clear ice cube (or fresh ice) into your prepared glass. Strain the Old Fashioned mixture over the ice.
  6. Garnish: Express the oils from one of the dried orange or blood orange garnishes over the drink by gently twisting it, then drop it into the glass.
